The caloric stimulator

The AquaStar water caloric stimulator is a medical device manufactured in Belgium by Instrumentation Difra SA. The caloric water stimulator is a device that delivers a flow of water into the auditory canal at controlled rates of flow and temperature, and is designed to test the vestibular function of a patient's body balance system. Vestibular stimulation of the semicircular canals produces involuntary eye movements.

Aquastar

The AquaStar offers a wide range of possibilities for caloric testing: ease of use, high-precision temperature control. The handle and double tube allow direct stimulation with water at the right temperature. Its removable cannula and disposable silicone tips make for easy hygiene management. AquaStar is ideal when water can be used for stimulation in examination rooms where a water inlet and outlet are available.

Temperature setting

The temperature is selected by a simple rotary switch, each of its four positions allowing a temperature preset to be configured. Each temperature can be set up to 48°C, in 0.2°C steps. Default values are 27°C, 30°C, 37°C and 44°C. The temperature is reached within 40 seconds of start-up, or from any other temperature. A large display shows the actual temperature.

Stimulation time setting

An internal chronometer allows a second rotary switch to select the stimulation time. Five stimulation times are available: 20, 30, 40, 50 and 60 seconds with a simple turn of the switch. The visual indications on the display and the audible indications will help the examiner to perform the caloric test easily and accurately. During the stimulation period, the reaction period and fixation period will be delimited by these visual and audible indications.
